What is a NOx Sensor?
The NOx sensor measures the amount of nitrogen oxides in a vehicle's exhaust gas and, together with an SCR catalyst, ensures efficient exhaust gas purification.

The aim is to make engine combustion as efficient as possible while keeping nitrogen oxide emissions within legal limits.

Most vehicles use two NOx sensors, installed before and after the SCR catalytic converter, which are used in most Euro 5 and 6 diesel vehicles.

A complex ceramic chip in the sensor head takes measurements directly in the hot exhaust stream, after which the electronics continuously transmit the NOx values via the data bus to the ECU.

Making Tomorrow Different Today.
How do NOx Sensors work to manage diesel engine emissions?

When the sensors detect that too much NOx is being emitted, they pass this on to the SCR system so that it can adjust the urea levels accordingly. Their function is therefore to monitor the NOx conversion efficiency of the catalyst. The sensors can work as part of a feedback loop to the control unit in the emissions system to make real-time adjustments and optimize NOx conversion.

The ECU can then make adjustments to optimize NOx conversion performance. The most common aftertreatment systems have two NOx sensors: one “upstream” on the turbo side of your Particulate Filter (DPF) and a second “downstream” on the outlet side of your Catalyst (DOC). The two signals, sent directly to your Engine Control Module, are compared to determine the “conversion efficiency” of your exhaust system. In the case of SCR technology, feedback can also be provided to the urea metering system, while in the case of lean NOx trap catalysts, a feedback loop can signal the trap to regenerate.

Precise Measurement Capacity
NOx sensors must be able to measure nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels in exhaust gases with high precision. This is critical to effectively managing engine performance and emissions control.
Double Chamber Design
Dual-chamber sensors can measure both oxygen and NOx content separately. This feature allows the sensors to accurately analyze exhaust gas composition and increases the effectiveness of emission management systems.
Real Time Data Transmission
The sensors must be able to instantly measure NOx levels in the exhaust gas and transmit them to the engine's Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This feature optimizes the engine's emission control system in real time.
Durability and Longevity
NOx sensors must be able to withstand high temperatures and harsh exhaust conditions. Long-lasting and reliable sensors reduce maintenance costs and keep sensor replacement to a minimum.
Special Design with Double Chamber!
The NOx sensor has a dual chamber design that measures both Oxygen and NOx content.

As the exhaust enters the sensor, Oxygen is pumped out and the NOx reaches a second chamber where the gas is exposed to a catalyst that calculates this information and reports it to your computer.
